Program teachers created lesson plans that integrated media literacy and media production skills into core middle school curriculum. These engaging lessons met California State and National Standards in Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies and Arts.
Here are a few examples of the 40+ lessons and projects that were conducted over the two-year program.
Awesome Snacks
This "awesome" lesson combines a critical examination of snack food advertising with math and science principles.
Geometry Slide Show
Students learn their geometry terms as they create simple slideshow presentations with digital images they take of shapes and angles found in the "real world".
Early Humans Poster Project
Students apply their knowledge of early humans as they use digital imaging software to create Early Humans "Wanted" posters.
Time Period Brochure
This project involves an examination of advertising technique and media representation along with an Earth Science unit on the geological time scale. Students act as travel agents and design a creative brochure using graphic design software to present one of the geological time periods as a vacation destination.
Media Literacy 101
Many of the lessons used by program teachers to introduce media literacy concepts to their students came from Just Think's media literacy guidebook, Changing the World Through Media Education. Here are some other examples:
